How to get the best price yourself

  1. 1
Check your tank and work out how much you need

Most distributors have a minimum order, often 500 litres, and a bigger order is usually a little cheaper per litre. Don't let the tank run near empty going into a cold spell: emergency top-ups cost more.

  2. 2
Ask three local distributors for a price on the same day

Prices move week to week and differ between distributors, often by €100 or more on a fill. Ask each for the delivered price for your exact amount, including VAT, and the earliest delivery date.

  3. 3
Ask whether the price changes with how you pay

Some distributors price differently for card, cash on delivery or bigger orders. Ask, so you compare like with like.

  4. 4
Order from the cheapest and get the price confirmed

A text or email with the price per litre, the total and the delivery date avoids surprises on the docket.

What people ask

How much is heating oil in Ireland today?

The national average is €1.58 a litre including VAT and carbon tax, from the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin for Mon 19 Oct 2026. That's about €788 for 500 litres and €1,418 for 900.

Is it cheaper to order 500 or 900 litres?

Per litre, bigger orders are usually a little cheaper, because delivery costs are shared over more oil. Ask for both prices; Cara's quotes do.

Why do prices differ so much between distributors?

Local distributors set their own margins and delivery charges, and prices move with the wholesale market week to week. The gap between the cheapest and dearest quote in a county is often €100 or more on a fill.

Should I fill now or wait?

Nobody can call the market. What you can control is the price you pay on the day you order: get three quotes the same day and take the lowest. If your tank is low going into a cold snap, don't wait.

Do I qualify for the Fuel Allowance?

The Fuel Allowance is paid from late September to April to people on certain long-term social welfare payments who meet a means test. Citizens Information has the details, and Budget 2027 may change the rate.

How this is worked out

The price is the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin's figure for Irish heating gasoil, consumer price including all taxes, published each Monday, divided by 1,000 to give a litre. A fill is litres × that price; your own distributor's price will differ, which is why Cara gets quotes.
